In the Name
which is above every Name

+Johannes van Alphen

Editorial note: This article was originally published in The Liberal Catholic (April 1999).

After having gone through the Confiteor and Absolution, a Healing Service as performed by a Priest then continues with an Exorcism. The opening words are significant: "In the Name which is above every Name, in the power of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost, I exorcise thee". Isis Unveiled, gives an insight as to what the words "In the Name which is above every Name" might have been intended to convey. It would appear that they refer to the very beginning of the differentiation and combination of cosmic energies such as are necessary for the evolution of form and life.

Aditi, the Glory of God
Figure 1 gives a symbolic representation of the first phase of evolution. figure1.jpg (10016 bytes)The word "Aditi" is probably related to the Greek word "Adytum" which means the sanctum, which is impenetrable. A very apt description, for the sanctum of the Glory of God is indeed impenetrable, unapproachable, dimensionless and timeless. Ancient Wisdom has it that in this timeless and dimensionless space appears a triangle. In the corners of this triangle appear the sacred letters A-U-M, forming a word often chanted during certain invocations. From the same word is derived the word ‘Amen’ as is used as an affirmation in Christian worship. Within this triangle there is as yet no differentiation. This phase is often referred to as "God sleeps", or "God slumbers". Without differentiation, there is no Name. Within this triangle there is but nameless undifferentiated cosmic energy.

It is from the two upper ribs of the triangle that the Mother ray and the Father ray emanate. The side of the Mother ray is shown by a broken line, which has a deep significance. It is said that the Mother aspect escapes through the spaces in the broken line. As Mother, she creates Space. In the Book of the Wisdom of Solomon she is described as "Mightily and sweetly doth she order all things … for she is privy to the mysteries of the knowledge of God". She creates not just any space, but a special Space of cosmic energy, being privy to the mysteries.

The broken line has a symbolic connection with the rib of Adam, from which it is said Eve is to have been made. The vertical spinal column and the horizontal ribs are symbolic of the Cross on which mankind is crucified. The vertical column is the masculine aspect in mankind, symbolised by Adam being created as an upright being. The feminine aspect is symbolised by the ribs, which lie perpendicular to the spinal column. The vertical spinal column represents the Will of the Father, whereas the ribs represent the creative power of the Holy Ghost, because by the ribs we are able to partake in creative arts, such as speaking, singing, but also in the use of our arms, which derive their strength from the ribs to which they are attached. In Genesis 3:20, the woman is named Eve because she is "the mother of all living", again a very apt description.

The Father and Mother rays have distinct roles in the creation of the worlds and all that live therein. The Father ray is that of the divine Will, the ideation by which the emanation of life is to take place. In Christianity this is known as the work of God the Father, the initiator. The Mother ray is that of the creator of Form. If one only thinks of the complexities of the evolution of chemistry which must have taken place to make it possible to provide a body even for the amoebae, one is filled with awe at what the creative power of the Mother ray must be capable of. In Christianity, this is often associated with God the Holy Ghost, in rituals symbolised by the colour red, the fiery power to create, to heal and to instruct. As the Mother she instructs and emboldens mankind to have courage and be master of the martial arts, for how else would mankind ever return to God the Father?

The Egg of Brahma and the Ark
In the next phase, as shown in Figure 2, the Mother ray creates the sea figure2.jpg (10351 bytes)as her first work. One need only think of Genesis to realise that indeed it was she who made the waters cover the earth. The reference to water is symbolic, for while the Mother might at a later stage have created seawater as H2O with a pinch of NaCl, at this stage she creates the etheric sea, which penetrates all matter. This ether is the carrier of waves of energy, such as light and heat. In its finer strata it is the carrier of divine thought and blessing. Being at the start of the Aquarian Age, probably few realise the impact which this Age will be making on mankind. Aquarius, the Waterman, who pours water from a jug, is symbolic of mankind having to deal with tremendous explorations and discoveries in the field of electromagnetic waves, of which the most sophisticated Telstar is but a feeble beginning. In time to come, Aquarius will take us further into the exploration of cosmic energy waves. This will not only be a new source of dynamic energy to sustain life on earth, but also the discovery of psychic energies, related to the power of thought and feeling.

Genesis 1:1 refers to the work of the Mother ray: "… the Spirit of God (God the Holy Spirit, the Mother ray) was moving over the face of the waters". Ancient Wisdom has it that through interaction with the Father ray, the Mother ray produced the first beginning of life. In the Ancient Wisdom, this is often referred to as God having created the Egg of Brahma. One finds this event in various ways described as the seed of life contained in a separated space, the Cosmos, symbolised by the Egg. It is also often symbolised as life contained in a vehicle, such as for instance the Ark, or the Vara. The latter is a vehicle in the Mazdean Vendidad. This vara, or ark, such as the Ark of Noah, is said to contain the seeds of life for a new evolution. The allegory of the vara and the ark, and also other similar accounts in other Holy Scriptures, mark the beginning of a new episode.

In Genesis 6:14 God said to Noah, "Make yourself an ark", and in verses 18 and 19: "I will establish my covenant with you, … your sons, your wife, and your son’ wives with you, … and of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind …". In the Mazdean Vendidad it is said that the Vara must contain the very noblest and finest types of mankind, but also all the seeds of life. Not only the seeds of the animal world, but also of the plant kingdom, and all that has life on earth, such as the mineral kingdom.

There are other allegorical pointers of interest. In verse 14, God said "Make yourself an ark, … and cover it inside and out with pitch". The ark was to have doors, but no windows. The story of the Vara runs along parallel lines: "… thou shalt seal up the vara and thou shalt make a door and a window self-shining within". These allegories refer all to the ark or vara as being the soul of mankind. Whether male or female, we are all the ark or the vara, in which the noblest and finest types of mankind are stored, to which we aspire to become. Also stored is the seed of every animal, plant and mineral, because we, as mankind, are made the keepers of God’s garden. The ark or vara is closed up with pitch inside and out, and the vara has a window, self-shining within. The self-shining window is the soul which receives its light not from outside, but illuminates itself from within. The Mazdean allegory goes even further by saying that there are created lights and uncreated lights. The created lights are the soul qualities, which we build up through experience life after life. The uncreated lights are a reflection of the divine light locked up within the soul, only to be released when mankind has placed his foot firmly on the path of enlightenment.

The Power of the Holy Trinity
Figure 2 now shows the emergence of the power of the Holy Trinity. From the Egg of Brahma emanates the Sacred Word, in Greek often referred to as the Logos. The Logos, or the Sacred Word, descends from the Egg, or the Vara or the Ark. The Logos, born from the Egg, is the Son of God. On the left is Nari, the pillar of the Mother, and on the right is the pillar of Nara, the pillar of the Father. It is clear that before us is the Cabalistic picture of the three columns: the left column representing the feminine aspect of Binah, the centre of the Christ consciousness wearing the crown of Kether, and the right column representing the masculine aspect of Chokma.

What is important to realise is that there is a distinct rhythm in the Healing service by first calling on the Name which is above every Name, calling on the highest principles in mankind, and thereafter descending into the realm of the revealed powers of the Holy Trinity, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. This transition from "In the Name which is above every Name" to the Power of the Holy Trinity means the crossing of a deep gulf which can only be bridged by understanding the mystery under which this transition takes place.
