Sounding the tone of the soul
an inner approach to the healing service

Editorial note: This article was originally published in the magazine The Liberal Catholic (April 1999).

One of the unique elements of The Liberal Catholic Church is her Healing Service. Even though ritual healing work can be traced back to the beginnings of Christianity, the form used by The Liberal Catholic Church takes a very special position within this tradition. The healing work done in our church is extremely modern and concurs well with current views on spiritual healing. At the same time it resonates on a deep level within our spiritual lives. Saturated with sublimated light and inspiration, the healing service purifies the auric vehicles and makes the personality susceptible to allow the tone of the soul to resonate within it. The healing work in our church forms an important part of our work. The future of our church will depend in part on the further development in this department.

On studying our Healing Service, we note that all essential elements of healing are contained therein in a very compact form. These are:

Invocation and tuning in on the spiritual basis of all life

Evoking the aid of the Healing Angel

Purification of the aura

Vitalisation of the chakras

Laying of hands and tuning the personality to the tone of the soul

Communion and activation of the Divine Spark in the personality and soul

Emphasis on the individual, authentic path to at-one-ment.

The accent in the Healing Service lies in the alignment of the personal life with the all-containing spiritual life. The universal life force is the bottomless well of healing. The invocation at the beginning of the Healing Service can be seen as the drawing down of a golden thread of energy from the spiritual Sun to the earth. This process is mirrored in our selves. At the same time we draw a connection as a golden thread from our inner sun - the monad - and the silver earth - our soul and personality. It is especially interesting to read in recent literature on spiritual healing about this "golden thread" which it is said connects soul and body as an energetic connection between the various chakras and our aura. This activation is made by the invocation and accompanied by the drawing of the sign of the cross. We attune our inner connections to the universal reservoirs of energy. This theme is pivotal in the entire Healing Service, the process being one of restoring and confirming the original connections.

The next step is evoking the aid of the Healing Angel. Especially the angels under direction of the Holy Lady Mary - in her role as World Mother she is also known as the Queen of the Healing Angels - play an important part in restoring energy and revitalising living forms. It is useful to open ourselves completely to the influence of these angels on calling for their assistance. The angelic custodians of healing force appear in soft tints of blue, green, pink and red, etc. The colour of the service is either green or red. Green is a universal healing colour, emphasising balance, peace and harmony. Red is more energetic and stimulating in nature and on singing the Veni Creator the space is filled with a powerful red glow that penetrates everything. This is the power of the creative fire that is invoked, the creative power of spiritual dynamics, the creative divine power that vitalises everything. In some cases it is better to use green, as the effect is more pacifying, in contradistinction to the red colour, which tends to be more fiery.

The next phase of the Healing Service is the purification of the aura. The existence of and working with the aura is considered very normal within the Liberal Catholic Church. In other churches this is generally not the case. We view the human being as a spiritual being that expresses itself in the physical world via a "spiritual" body into a physical body. This is normally expressed in the sevenfold constitution of man. The purification of the vehicles is effected by the exorcism during which the priest draws on a spiritual reservoir of energy to purify inharmonious vibrations. We can imagine this as the removal of brown and grey coloured clouds from the aura. Using the sign of the cross and words of power this suppressing energy, which is often the cause of blockage in the energetic housekeeping, is transformed. Perhaps it is useful at this point to digress briefly on what illness, seen from a inner point of view, actually is. Put simply, illness is the symptom of the over-stimulation or blockage of energy in our system. We can perhaps picture this better by considering ourselves as beings of light and energy, in which continuous streams of energy flow like a stream of clear water. In this crystalline structure of our inner being vortices and clouds of energy are created by our thoughts and emotions. These can create all sorts of interference on the healthy flow of energy, affecting our chakras and the flow of energy through them. Many other causes of sickness exist, for example epidemics may be linked to the energetic housekeeping of the earth. The karmic aspect of sickness is also of paramount importance. Causes can be traced back to previous lives, but could also relate to the karma of a family, a country, or a specific group of people. In such cases the karma is to be left to do it's work. Hence the explicit mention in our Healing Service of the words: "so far as may be expedient for them". It is of importance to understand that, in all cases, sickness is a signal that something in the energetic system requires attention.

Having completed the purification of the aura we take the next step, using healing oil which is specifically consecrated for this purpose by the Bishop on Maundy Thursday. Invoking Our Lord Christ, Maria and the archangel Raphael, the priest then anoints with a cross the brow, crown, throat and nape of the neck using this strongly magnetised oil. On anointing, energy flows from the priest's thumb, via the oil, activating the underlying chakras. The effect is that they spin faster. We can imagine the chakras as being small vortices of energy. When these vortices spin clockwise, they absorb universal energy and direct this energy to the organs to which they are connected. When they spin in an anticlockwise direction, they do not absorb (or absorb very little) of this universal energy. It is even possible that a chakra is stationary, implying partial or complete damage, in which case no energy flows through this centre with concomitant ill effect on the health. The priest therefore attempts to vitalise the chakras with the anointing. It is a well known fact that inasmuch the officiating priest and the congregation present are aware and actively co-operate in this operation, it's effect improves dramatically. By enfolding this moment in golden light and connecting the chakras from within our consciousness with the healing energy that is omnipresent, an immense amount of power and vitality is added. One should attempt to visualise the persons requesting healing as "whole" and in thought to penetrate every part of their being with golden light. Merely visualising a person as a crystal of pure structure already brings healing powers to tat person. Combined with the ritual of the Healing Service, this effect is magnified several times. The effect of this part of the service is thus the enlivening of the chakras, so that the universal energy may be absorbed more efficiently.

A very sacred moment now follows during the Healing Service. Putting it simply, one could compare it to touching the string of the soul, sounding forth the tone of the soul that resonates in all the various auric vehicles. The soul is the great healer in every human being. Therein, after all, lies the original power and harmony. The task we set before us in an incarnation stems from the soul. In esoteric traditions the forming of a definite cord of consciousness between the soul and the personal life is known as the building of the Anthakarana. During the Healing Service we touch the tone of the soul by calling the healing power and love of Our Lord Christ. As a stream of light this power flows into the aura and sounds the eternal tone of the inner healer living in the depths of our spiritual being. For a single moment this tone penetrates the auric vehicles. The wonderful thing is that no two healing services are ever the same. As celebrant one experiences different workings in different people in every phase of the Healing Service. The effect of the laying of hands is always different. It is also something that is not done by the priest. It is as if he stands aside to allow the indescribable power of the Lord Christ to flow through him. It is quite amazing, but this power seems to materialise out of the earth and the air. At the voicing of the words this power flows like a type of all-containing energy. One almost wouldn't believe it were it not that one experiences this time and again, each time the sluices being opened to do exactly what is necessary for the person concerned. It seems as if for a moment all lines are pulled straight. This tuning in of the personality with the soul is the heart of the Healing Service. But it occurs for a moment only and it is up to the person involved to use the impulse received and to allow the restored balance to grow. The own, conscious approach of the healing process is essential. It is only by personal endeavour that staying healing and harmony may be attained. The major challenge, normally, is that we have developed the way we use our energies out of habit. Even though the balance of the soul has been attained momentarily, often we fall back into old patterns and within a day or so we have lost this at-one-ment. This is also one of the major themes in modern literature on spiritual healing: How can we learn to hear our own tone in our lives and align our lives accordingly.

We now come to the communion. It is advisable that persons requesting a Healing Service after a Holy Eucharist receive communion in the Healing Service. The reason is quite simple. The Healing Service makes us more susceptible and the effect of receiving communion at this time is therefore enhanced. Receiving the Host restores a deeper line within us. This is the tone of the Divine Spark - the monad - called the star of being in modern literature - a point of exceptional beauty and radiance, located in the middle of our body.

Our Healing Service does not work like Reiki, which primarily focuses on magnetisation of the etheric body, but on the complete energetic housekeeping. The emphasis is on purification in general and restoring the resonance of the tone of the soul in the auric vehicles. The celebrant is not called to pay attention to details such as small auric scars and blockages, which are sometimes dealt with in other forms of spiritual healing. The Healing Service is an exceptionally beautiful and pure form of healing work and many wonderful effects are known. In combination with the other forms of spiritual whole-making offered by the church the complete link -spirit, soul and body- can be reached. The healing work performed in The Liberal Catholic Church is of paramount importance because of it's completeness and as it directs it's attention to the universal and powerful healing energies. The development of this work is an important task for The Liberal Catholic Church, now and in the near future. It is up to each one of us to do something with it.
