An Esoteric Approach to the Trinity

+Allan B Barns

To some, the title ‘ESOTERIC Christianity E-Magazine’ must seem strange; a contradiction. After all ‘esoteric’ means hidden, secret, only for the enlightened, the initiated. To publish or discuss esoteric truths on the Internet open to anyone who has access to a computer seems, on the face of it, a little paradoxical.

However, we should not be fooled. Today we live in a world of increasing light, vibration, climate change and scientific advancement. To put it crudely, humanity is being bombarded, subjected to powerful stimulation. One might say that the servants of God are making every effort to encourage mankind to take a further step forward towards our divine destiny. Today’s world is an entirely different one from that of two thousand odd years ago.

St Paul said ‘We speak wisdom among them that are perfect’ (1Cor 2:5). Surely a very esoteric saying! Herein lies the safeguard of this more open approach. For those who have not yet gained that inner understanding, that perfection of the soul, the message of this web site will not appeal and simply be passed over. Maybe, however, such open remarks could produce a spark of recognition for the future.

That said, the esoteric and exoteric message has nevertheless always been the same. Truth is Truth. It is our interpretation of that Truth, in whatever exoteric form it happens to have been poured, which is important. As our understanding of its all-embracing power, beauty and promise develops, so will our soul and our comprehension consistently expand and grow. Hence the importance of reincarnation. Many, many lives are needed.

With this in mind, how could we look at the concept of God as a Trinity from a more esoteric stance?

Firstly, we had the autocratic God of the Jews. One stern Father and no other. Then we were taught to believe in a Saviour, Jesus Christ, who claimed to be the Son of God and brought forward the ideal of unconditional LOVE. This humanity has found very hard to put into practice. We have only to look around the world, or just at the behaviour of the Christian Churches, to know that, up until now, we have not been very successful. However, for those who have eyes to see, there are increasing pockets of effort to reach towards Christ’s teaching.

The name Trinity is not actually found in the Bible. The doctrine only gradually developed over the early centuries of the Church. Yet, we cannot say that its implications have really taken root in the minds of ordinary people. It was not that important. Maybe its essence was only found in the esoteric traditions.

We are taught, as far as we can understand it at present, that the three attributes or powers of the Triune God are working through us all and influencing what we do, either consciously or unconsciously. They are as follows:

That God is:
  LIGHT God the Father
LOVE God the Son (or Mother in some teachings)
ACTION The Holy Spirit the POWER in the world.

If we can only meditate upon and grasp but something of the implications of these ideas about the Trinity we will be in a better position to forward actively Christ’s work in the world of today.

GOD THE FATHER. LIGHT WILL, is maybe a little bit difficult for us at present. It needs care. It is stimulating and coming rapidly into the world. We can be led astray into the paths of arrogance and pride. But it is still an important First Ray aspect of pressure and motivation.

GOD THE SON. LOVE for all Oh! If we could only bring this down from our soul level, what a difference it could make to Christ’s work. The Second Ray aspect.

GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT. RIGHT ACTION the POWER to actually do something. The steady pressure for good. This incorporates those attributes that we often find difficult to put into practice. Tolerance. Team-work. Co-operation. The Seventh Ray. Ordered Service, Group Ceremonial.

It is here, with the Third Person of the Trinity, God intimately at work within his world that, as far as our limited understanding allows, we need to try and understand the work of the Rays. They all play a part, particularly at the present time, and it is here that our comprehension of the Rays becomes even more difficult.

In brief: We can think of the First and Second Rays as Major Rays. The remaining Rays, namely the Third and Sixth, Fourth and Fifth, would be classed as Minor Rays, embodied in and with echoes and close links with the Seventh Ray influencing the world around us to day. This group then could be said to be the Third Major Ray. However, the subject is too complex for a short article such as this and maybe, it is best just to realise that while each Ray has a dominant aspect it also carries within it essences of the others.

For those who are interested, this idea is stressed in the arrangement of the Rays in our Churches. All the Rays are as a unity in the Altar Stone. Moreover, the three ‘Trinitarian’ ones mentioned above (1st, 2nd & 7th) are grouped around the centre of the High Altar and down the centre of the Church.

The two with feminine aspects dominating (3rd & 6th) down the left side and those of a more masculine aspect (4th & 5th) down the right. Bishop Wedgwood always made a point of ascribing, if possible with a separate Candle, a special place for Our Lady on the Gospel (left side) of the Altar and one for St Michael on the Epistle (right side).

Nevertheless, these are but the external secrets or guides to our esoteric nature. They require study, practice, effort, and painful self-sacrifice. They will lead us to the Way of the Cross, the way towards discipleship, the way of the Trinity, the way of direct communion with our Master: the aim of every Christian.

If we are to fulfil the charge laid upon us by our Church Founders, we need to be about our Father’s business. We need to see to it that we meet the needs of the present moment, which is after all, just the start of the future. It is right to introduce outwardly those secrets that in the past were only given to the few. We know that the future of humanity is secure. But when and how ‘the earth will be filled with the glory of God’ and the truth that ‘Christ is our Light’ will be manifest to all, is up to us.

Let this Esoteric approach to the Trinity be our guide. Let the bringing of LIGHT, LOVE and POWER of the Living Christ be our constant care.
